Salary:

Purpose of Position : Provide behavior modification, training and welfare for animals in the SPCA Cincinnati shelters from intake to adoption and post-adoption. Implement evidence based humane training methodologies to improve positive outcomes and enhance the human animal bond. Works with staff and volunteers across multiple departments to coordinate the behavioral welfare of shelter dogs.

Job Description

  • Oversee and participate in the implementation of in-house shelter animal training programs using positive reinforcement training methods.
  • Includes evaluation of animals, preparation of written training plans, progress reports, and hands-on work with animals in the program.
  • Perform accurate, complete, and objective behavior evaluations on dogs assessed for intake into our adoption program.
  • Accurately and reliably keep training records and working files.
  • Work creatively to match dogs with special needs to appropriate homes
  • Creation of educational handouts and other written materials as needed
  • Lead group training classes for the public and for volunteers/staff with in-house animals
  • Work closely with Intake department to assess incoming dogs as needed and identify and address behavior problems immediately
  • Participate in case reviews and make euthanasia recommendations if necessary, for dogs who do not meet our adoption criteria
  • Provide professional opinions while writing case reviews and recommendations on cases that are not showing progress or are deteriorating.
  • Exemplify and coach others on low-stress handling
  • Oversee post adoption behavior support, including phone, email and in-person counsel and training
  • Perform cat and dog behavioral assessments that will include dog to dog introductions
  • Provide regular updates in PetPoint to include any progress, stagnation, or deterioration noted
  • Provide and communicate appropriately the recommendations on changes to training plans as needed.
  • Research new training methods and shelter animal training programs offered elsewhere to ensure training programs and techniques stay fresh and up-to-date. Collaborate with outside trainers in gaining new information and techniques.
  • Complete and maintain timely, accurate records of all training sessions, data entry of behavior modifications, dog play sessions and other behavior notes in PetPoint to provide the information to volunteers, staff and the public
  • Must have strong critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Lifting and handling animals of varying sizes and breeds, bending, stooping and walking on a daily basis. Up to 50lbs of weight or more.
  • Ability to effectively and safely handle a variety of animals.

Conditions of Employment

Conditions of employment include working under adverse conditions such as inclement weather and noise with daily exposure to infectious diseases, parasites, and animal waste in a physically and emotionally demanding environment.

Job Requirements

  • CPDT, CTC, KPA and/or PCT-A credentials
  • Valid drivers license and insurable driving record
  • College degree preferred
  • Shelter based assessment experience or an established dog trainer with experience handling all types (breeds, temperament, and size, etc.)
  • Proven knowledge and practical experience in advanced level dog training, knowledge of dog breeds, behavior and positive reinforcement based training methods.
  • Fear-free and/or Low-Stress Handling certification preferred
  • Available to work weekends, holiday shifts, and overtime as needed
