Job Description

Our client, a well-established and growing law firm, is seeking a forward-thinking Director of Finance to lead its firmwide finance and accounting operations. This is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing all core financial functions, with a strong emphasis on driving process improvement, ensuring compliance, strengthening reporting practices, and enhancing profitability. The ideal candidate is a strategic operator with proven experience in a law firm environment , capable of developing efficient systems and implementing sound financial controls. Reporting to the firm’s Chief Operating/Financial Officer, the Director of Finance will play a critical role in shaping the financial direction of the firm and aligning operations with its long-term goals. This is a hybrid role requiring 3 days of in office work each week, 2 days remote. Key Responsibilities: Oversee all aspects of the finance and accounting functions, including general ledger, reporting, budgeting, treasury, audit, cash flow management, fixed assets, and accounts payable. Ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end close processes and prepare financial statements and reports for internal stakeholders. Lead the firm’s budgeting and expense management efforts, including preparation of annual operating and capital budgets, as well as periodic forecasting and variance analysis. Coordinate with external tax advisors and provide documentation to support tax filings and compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations. Manage partner compensation processes in collaboration with firm leadership and internal payroll teams. Maintain accuracy and integrity of the general ledger and subsidiary systems while continuously improving internal controls and accounting processes. Foster relationships with banks, vendors, and external stakeholders; serve as a representative of the firm within the broader financial and business community. Champion innovation and continuous improvement across finance functions, identifying opportunities to streamline operations and implement technological or structural enhancements. Collaborate cross-functionally with firm leadership and key stakeholders to ensure financial initiatives align with broader business objectives. Lead and develop a high-performing team, creating a culture of accountability and collaboration Qualifications: A minimum of 10 years of progressive finance and accounting leadership experience is required, with significant experience in a law firm or similarly complex professional services environment. Deep knowledge of core financial functions including budgeting, reporting, treasury, audit, and compliance. Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to interpret financial data and link insights to broader business goals. Demonstrated success implementing financial infrastructure, systems, and process improvements. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively present to and engage with stakeholders at all levels. Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field is required; CPA designation or equivalent technical accounting background is required. MBA or advanced degree preferred.
