General Summary/Objective: The Director of Tree Operations manages a team dedicated to planting and maintaining thousands of trees across the District, Maryland, and Virginia. The role oversees department operations, programs, and relationships, and reports to the COO, supporting Casey Trees’ mission to connect people to trees. Essential Functions: Ensure adherence to organizational policies and procedures. Collaborate with the COO to improve processes, especially personnel management. Conduct performance appraisals and provide ongoing feedback. Mentor staff to develop professional skills. Drive training initiatives and identify suitable training solutions. Promote a safety culture by managing hazardous conditions. Program Management: Develop and evaluate tree planting and maintenance programs. Manage performance of all divisions within Tree Operations. Develop workflows and strategies for field operations. Create annual budgets, work plans, and goals. Collaborate with nursery production at Casey Tree Farm. Engage in process review and improvement. Inter-Departmental Functions: Participate in senior management to coordinate activities. Report to the COO regularly. Collaborate with program directors and leadership. External Organizational Functions: Build partnerships with nonprofits, government, and community stakeholders. Represent Casey Trees at external meetings and events. Engage with the community on tree-related issues. Technical Skills: Maintain knowledge of urban forestry issues. Proficient in relevant software. Stay current on management concepts. Development: Assist in cultivating funding sources. Secondary Responsibilities: Oversee landscape maintenance at DC offices. Perform other duties as assigned. Engage in problem solving, decision making, project management, and safety orientation. Supervisory Responsibility: Supervise the Managing Arborist, Field Manager, Horticulturist, and Sr. Program Manager. Working Conditions: Work both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions. Use hand tools and equipment, with physical demands including lifting up to 100 pounds and climbing. Position Type / Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 7:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., with occasional evenings, weekends, and extended hours. Travel: Local travel within the Greater Washington, DC area, including overnight trips to Casey Tree Farm. Required Qualifications: Undergraduate degree in horticulture, forestry, or related field, with three years of experience. Arborists’ certification or ability to obtain within one year. Valid driver’s license with a clean record. Strong communication skills and experience working with diverse audiences. Experience supervising staff and managing budgets. Proficiency with Microsoft Office; ability to learn other software. Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in related field. Experience with volunteer management.
