New Orleans-based historical tour company is seeking an in-house historian. This is a key position within the company and it is essential that the person have a Masters in History. They should be highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to communicate in a friendly and clear manner with other historians, staff and guests. Experience researching historical subjects, including WWI, WWII and American History, and excellent writing skills are a must.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Historical Expertise and Oversight
· Ensure historical accuracy and narrative consistency across all tour collateral, including educational materials, marketing collateral and digital content
· Provide input during the development of new historical tour itineraries, including battlefields, key historical figures, and context-specific sites.
· Curate recommended reading/viewing lists for each tour theme
· Work with marketing as needed to provide input on historical photos and quotes
Guest Relations
· Interface with tour guests through email and over the phone to answer questions they have about the historical tours
· Become well-versed in each tour itinerary in order to answer guests' queries
Historical Brand Stewardship
· Help navigate controversial historical topics with sensitivity and truth
· Contribute to blogs, articles, and newsletters to elevate the company’s thought leadership in the historical tour industry
· Participate in content audits to review and improve historical clarity and quality
Liaison for Historians
· Act as the liaison to fellow historians
· Be able to cultivate good relationships with them
· Work with historians and others to develop tour itineraries and materials
Resource Creation
· Update existing tour roadbooks and develop roadbooks for new tours
· Create materials for teachers and student travelers on private educational tour, including lesson plans, trip prep guides
· Support high school and college-credit program content alignment
Internal Collaboration
· Serve as a resource for the sales, customer service, and marketing teams to answer history-related questions and provide training
· Proofread sales materials, proposals, and other materials as needed
· Work with Customer Service to evaluate guest feedback on the tour itineraries to ensure tours remain compelling and historically up to date
Speaking
· Be comfortable speaking on webinars and at events, alumni reunions, and prospective traveler nights when needed
· Attend conventions and conferences related to history and sales when needed
Other
· Learn and become fluent in the company database, Filemaker Pro
· Have facility with business software applications (Word, Excel, Google sheets, Canva, Asana and other similar programs)
There are some busy times of the tour season that might require you to work longer hours or come in on a weekend so flexibility is appreciated. This is a full-time, in-office position.
